Urban Agriculture Internship

Compensation: $15.00/hour
Hours: 20 hours per week
Position Overview
The Urban Agriculture Internship is a hands-on opportunity to grow your skills in urban food systems, sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and neighborhood development. Based at Victory Garden Initiative’s urban farm in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood, this experience blends education with real-world practice in one of the city’s most vibrant and resilient communities.
Interns will gain valuable experience in all aspects of urban farming, including crop planning and production, composting, pest and disease management, farmstand support, and volunteer coordination. This is a great opportunity for individuals passionate about food justice, sustainability, and working directly with community members.
Learning Opportunities & Responsibilities
As an intern, you will:
Collaborate with the Farm Manager to plan and implement food production throughout the season
Assist with compost production and soil management
Plan, plant, irrigate, and harvest crops
Harvest, clean, and pack produce for our community Farmstand
Support and maintain permaculture and pollinator plantings
Help with seasonal preparations and farm planning projects
Lead small groups of volunteers during community workdays
Provide tours of the Victory Garden Urban Farm
Qualifications
We’re looking for someone who:
Enjoys physical, outdoor work (including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and standing for long periods)
Is comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions (excluding extreme or hazardous weather)
Values multicultural awareness and works respectfully across diverse communities
Has strong communication and teamwork skills
Can manage multiple tasks and work independently
Is flexible, adaptable, and ready to jump into a wide range of tasks
Has an interest in food systems, agriculture, permaculture, climate change, or sustainability
(Bonus) Has experience or coursework in biology, agriculture, environmental studies, or natural resources
