Why We Do The Blitz.

The Great Milwaukee Blitz sparked the creation of Victory Garden Initiative and remains the embodiment of our mission: building a community powered, community run food system rooted in connection, wellness, and action.

We are proudly headquartered in the Harambee neighborhood, an area deeply impacted by food insecurity. As grocery store closures increase and food deserts widen across Milwaukee, this work is more urgent than ever.

Each year, the Blitz brings neighbors together to install garden beds and teach families how to grow their own food. What began as a day of action has grown into a movement, reconnecting communities to the land, to their health, and to one another.

Growing food builds more than meals. It builds confidence, mental and physical wellness, and long term security. When households grow together, abundance is shared. And when enough gardens take root, a resilient local food system begins to grow — powered by neighbors.

Our vision is bold and simple: install enough garden beds and teach enough people to grow food so communities can rely on one another. Fresh produce moving from yard to yard. Blocks feeding blocks. Families less dependent on distant supply chains.

This is how we fight food insecurity.
This is how we build resilience.
This is how we strengthen Milwaukee —one garden at a time.

Sponsor a Garden Bed!

When this work began, we measured success by the number of garden beds we installed. Then we realized something important — we had placed the fewest beds in our own neighborhood.

That realization changed everything.

To ensure our neighbors in Harambee have direct access to fresh, homegrown food, we launched our Sponsored Bed Program. Each year, generous community members and partner organizations sponsor garden beds so they can be installed at no cost for Harambee residents.

Because food access should begin at home.
