| Volunteer Highlights |
Michaela Molter
While you might think we’re a bunch of plant gurus here at Victory Garden Initiative, we still have a lot to learn when it comes to edibles like fruit and nut trees. Recently, we’ve been relying heavily on the patience and expertise of volunteer Michaela Molter, a horticulturist at Johnson’s Nursery in Menomonee Falls. As part of our Fruity Nutty Campaign planning committee, Michaela has helped us connect to local sources of plants through Johnson’s Nursery, find varieties that do well in the Milwaukee area, and learn far more about growing trees than we ever could have from Wikipedia. Michaela is always willing to do extra research for us, and much of the credit for this year’s expansion of the Fruity Nutty Campaign goes to her! Thanks for all your help, Michaela. You’re a Fruity Nutty rock star.
Krista Lanphier We first met Krista when she enrolled in our Food Leader Program, which kicked off last February. If you’ve been to any of our monthly Eat & Meet potlucks recently, you have Krista to thank for making sure everything runs smoothly. Krista arrives early to set up, and she makes sure that the dishes are done while the rest of us are still sitting around discussing the topic at hand. Krista is a founding member of the green team at her workplace and is working to compost food waste from their test kitchen’s experiments. Krista is also currently helping plan our Fruity Nutty Affair fundraiser set for mid-February. While she seems to like being behind the scenes, we thought we’d take this opportunity to embarrass her publicly, and more importantly to say thank you to November’s Volunteer of the Month!
Brian Cummings
Brian Cummings is one volunteer who has yet to say “no” to any project that’s come his way since he started volunteering with Victory Garden Initiative last year. During May’s Victory Garden Blitz, Brian came early and stayed late every day he could. Since then, Brian’s showed up at gardening days, worked with printers to get t-shirts made, staffed multiple outreach booths, and is currently serving on our Fruity Nutty Planning Committee. As if that wasn't enough, he also used his GIS know-how to help us revise a map of food producing and composting sites in Milwaukee. Sometimes Brian likes to pretend like he’s no big deal, like he’s not much of a doer--but we know better. With his quick wit and unstoppable work ethic, Brian is a joy to work with. Thanks for all you do, Brian!
Carly Rubach
We have an organizational crush on Carly. She is a dedicated volunteer who has been sharing her skills with VGI since August of last year. She has provided enormous support, even down-to-the-wire, in helping us publish out our newsletter every month and serves on our development committee. She is spearheading our upcoming membership drive. In collaboration with Great Lakes Distillery, this drive will include a tour of the Brewery, absinthe tasting, and yummy late summer inspired victuals.
You may already know Carly as a columnist on ThirdCoast Digest. She holds a degree in journalism with a focus on magazine writing from the University of Missouri-Columbia. We just learned that in addition to her many talents, Carly plays the guitar and knows how to make bow ties! Though she thinks Carly Simon “is neat”, she is not named after her. Rather she was named after her grandpa Carl. Her favorite vegetable? Tomatillos. Why? “Because they are used to make salsa verde,” she says, “And salsa verde is delightful.” Indeed.
